Stelvio, the paradise of summer skiing and\u00a0one of the most important destinations in the world for cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>

The Stelvio pass (2758 meters asl)<\/strong>, in the municipality of Bormio,\u00a0 is the most famous \u201cCima Coppi\u201d in cycling history.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The road, the masterpiece of the engineer Carlo Donegani, was constructed from 1820 to 1825<\/strong> and, nowadays, is one of the most important destinations in the world for cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers.\u00a0 The Pass, marked by the characteristic smell of roasted sausages and sauerkraut from the Tyrolean kiosks, presents its visitors with some souvenir shops, a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Snow<\/strong>, hotels with bars and restaurants and the highest bank in Europe.\u00a0 Inside the bank, there is the Donegani Museum with its precious collections dedicated to the White War (The Italian front of the first world war 1915 – 1918).<\/strong><\/p>\n

HISTORY<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

During the first twenty years of 1800, the Austrian Emperor and duke of Milan: Franz Joseph II of Habsburg, requested a road between Milan and Austria. The road, built with political and military objectives, was to be constructed completely inside of the Empire’s national borders.<\/p>\n

On the 23rd of April 1820 the Emperor approved the project<\/strong> designed by the engineer Carlo Donegani and presented by the Viceroy of the Kingdom of Lombardian-Venetia (Giuseppe Ranieri).\u00a0 Works on the road started on the 13th of June and in October 1825 the road was officially opened<\/strong>, connecting Bormio (Sondrio) to Spondigna (Bolzano) all year round.<\/p>\n

Built to protect the Austrian territory of Milan and Lombardy, the Stelvio Pass was instead the linchpin of the Italian western front during the first world war, forming an uninterrupted line from this high mountain to the level grounds of Carso and Venetia-Giulia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SUMMER SKIING<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cAt the Stelvio there is the most advanced hotel offer for mountain sports, summer skiing and mountaineering. Over one thousand students from all over the world, attend the various and renowned ski schools at the same time. The first summer ski courses on the Stelvio area begun in 1931 at the Rifugio Livrio, then in the years 1934-1935 on the Pass with about one hundred students as a whole. At the time, the only way to climb was to use the seal skins and lot of effort. Now the students are more than a thousand distributed in the various hotels and shelters and ski lifts spread everywhere. “<\/em><\/p>\n

With these words we are told\u00a0 about Summer skiing in Stelvio by the Bormio tourist information book of 1967. Also today the Stelvio glacier is an important destination for famous athletes and simple skiers, both united by the same passion and the pleasure of skiing above the clouds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lo Stelvio \u00e8 comodamente raggiungibile da Bormio seguendo la strada statale N 38. Una strada di montagna suggestiva e panoramica porta in poco pi\u00f9 di venti chilometri e quaranta tornanti ai 2758 metri s.l.m. del passo. Nei mesi estivi di maggior affluenza il Passo Stelvio \u00a0\u00e8 raggiungibile anche con i il servizio pubblico gestito da Automobilistica Perego<\/a>.<\/p>\n
