Bormio’s thermal waters are classified as hyperthermal and alkaline earth sulfate, as well as slightly radioactive due to the presence of small beneficial quantities of radon. These waters, that spring from within the Stelvio National Park, help to induce a deep state of relaxation and have detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties. Built inside a medieval fortress, the Bagni Vecchi (old baths) take you back in time over 2,000 years, from the ancient grottos of the Roman baths that lead to one of the hot springs, to the panoramic open air pool, recently renovated, with fantastic views over the Bormio valley. Here you can enjoy a unique and timeless wellness experience as people have done for centuries.
There are 6 different areas with thermal facilities for a truly relaxing, reinvigorating experience, in an enchantingly beautiful setting. Discover the Bagni Romani (Roman baths), famous since the 1st century BC, The Bagni dell’Arciduchessa (baths of the Archduchess) named after the Archduchess of Austria who often spent long periods in the summer at the Bagni Vecchi, the Grotta Sudatoria di San Martino (grotto of St. Martin) a cave that leads to one of the hot springs in the heart of the mountainside, the Bagni Medioevali (Medieval baths), Bagni Imperiali (Imperial baths) and the panoramic pool overlooking the ‘Magnificent Land’ as Bormio is often known. Housed within an art nouveau Grand Hotel from the 1800s, the Bagni Nuovi (new baths) offer 4 different areas with thermal facilities, a unique sensorial experience of aromas, light, and colours.
Each area offers a different thermal experience: Starting with the reinvigorating Giardini di Venere (gardens of Venus), you continue on to the detoxifying Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Grotto), and the revitalising Bagni di Giove (Jupiter baths). Don’t miss the Vasche di Saturno (pools of Saturn), two large interconnecting rectangular pools with underwater music and water at different temperatures with a semicircular pool beneath, fed by a high intensity waterfall. These pools, together with the small wooden hut nearby, were used in the past to wash a sheep’s fleece before shearing.
The small hut was a heated changing room for the shepherd who then entered the pools to wash the animals, the waterfalls completed the rinse.
La Baita di Lucina is a panoramic bio sauna with music therapy to rejuvenate the skin and relax body and mind. The sauna is lined with 19th century Swiss pine panels, a typical example of the work of Valtellinese master carpenters, and evokes the atmosphere of the ‘baite’ (small mountain huts) of that period.
Note the authentic luster lamp, where the keys to the house were hung, and that according to local tradition protected the house from evil spirits.
