BOTANICAL GARDEN

Open from May to September, the gardens over 14,400m2 display a large amount of the rich and varied flora of the Stelvio National Park (over 1,400 species) as well as the Appennines and other mountain chains, European and non, for a total of 2,500 plant species. It is divided into 4 sections: the flora of the Stelvio National Park, collections of botanical geography from the Alps, Europe and outside Europe, the Arctic and Antarctic, systematic collections and an arboretum.

FORTE DI OGA AND PALUACCIO NATURE RESERVE

The Venini di Oga military fort was built in Dossaccio between 1908 and 1914 to defend the principal valleys of the Alta Valtellina. The large structure contains four steel gun turrets where the cannons were located and that, thanks to its east-west orientation, could turn and defend all the passes and valleys that were potentially threatened by the enemy.
The Paluaccio di Oga nature reserve is a wetland environment, one of the few left in Italy, of great naturalistic interest. Created in 1983, the wetland dates back to around 13,000 years ago and covers an area of over 30 hectares. Within this area it conserves a number of environments of great naturalistic interest (bogs, peat meadows, Nardus grasslands, woodland areas), including a wide range of species.

CORNELIANI IRONWORKS IN VALDIDENTRO

For many years the extraction and manufacturing of iron was an important economic activity for Alta Valtellina. The Premadio ironworks were active from 1852 to 1875. There were 4 ovens, 4 mallets, a rolling mill and a workshop where up to 15 tonnes of iron were manufactured every day.

CARLO DONEGANI MUSEUM

The“Carlo Donegani”museum is located at 2.758 m above sea level on the Stelvio Pass and is a collection of first-hand accounts of life on the Stelvio Pass in all its forms. Located in the Banca Popolare di Sondrio, the museum tells the story of the pass from different points of view, from the First World War, to the ski schools, the glacier and the National Park.

STELVIO NATIONAL PARK VISITOR’S CENTREm VALFURVA

The visitor’s centre in S. Antonio Valfurva was built to provide a holistic vision of the natural and human aspects of the National Park based on 3 fundamental themes: flora and fauna, landscape and man-made structures. Through the information panels, artefacts and multimedia installations the visitor can understand the most relevant points about the park.

ROCK CARVINGS IN GROSIO

The rock carvings park in Grosio was founded in 1978 to highlight and protect the archeological heritage of Castle Hill that overlooks the town of Grosio, located between Tirano and Bormio. Within the park itself the impressive remains of the Old Castle of S. Faustino and the new Viscount’s castle stand out.
The Magna cliff, one of the largest engraved rocks in the Alps, was discovered in 1966 by Davide Pace and presents more than 5,000 engravings. Another group of rocks, the Giroldo hill, was discovered in 1970 again by Davide Pace, north of Castle Hill. Made up of 50 rocks, the one known as Roccia degli Armigeri, is of particular interest due to the presence of anthropomorphised figures.

HOTEL ADELE AND HOTEL PIROVANO, A WINNING PARTNERSHIP

Furthermore there are interesting opportunities for our guests during great sport events that reach Stelvio Pass.

ICE RINK

The Bormio indoor ice rink is open nine months of the year, from July to March, and is the ideal place to take those first tentative steps on the ice. The rink also offers a Coffee break room and skate hire. In the evening the ice rink transforms into a dancefloor with lights and music. The Bormio ice rink often plays host to important short track skating events. Olympic champions like Arianna Fontana and Martina Valcepina grew up skating here.

CLIMBING

The Bormio area, largely thanks to the important bolt setting work by Alpine Guide Eraldo Meraldi, offers fantastic opportunities for climbing all year round. The most well-known and popular areas are the single-pitch routes near the Bagni Vecchi and Isolaccia, which both offer more than 100 singlepitch routes each (from 4c to 8a).
For multi-pitch routes the Sasso dei Contrabbandieri (smugglers’ rock) and the Cancano cliff face offer a good selection of itineraries, that are securely set with easy approaches.
In the adjacent valleys and near to some mountain refuges, there are some
more well set routes that we will leave you to discover.
In the winter months in Valfurva, Valdidentro and Valdisotto there are 3
indoor climbing walls run by the local CAI (Italian Alpine Club) section.

CURLING

Bormio is one of the few Alpine towns that offers an indoor curling rink where you can try this fun, unusual sport. As well as providing information on some of the basic techniques and the necessary equipment, the Bormio Curling Club will help you take your first steps on the ice.

BOCCE (BOWLS)

Do not underestimate this sport. Played throughout the world it is easier to say than to do. In Bormio and the surrounding villages there are a number of bocce courts, both indoor and outdoor, where you can train and prepare yourself for the numerous tournaments organised in the area.

TENNIS

In Bormio and the surrounding villages there are numerous tennis courts; in Bormio, Valdidentro, Valdisotto and Valfurva you can find open air and synthetic courts where you can play in the summer and enjoy some outdoor activity.

SNOWSHOEING

In Bormio winter days are best spent outdoors in the open air, walking with snow shoes along the paths that connect the various points of the town, or heading into the woods around the area. The magical feeling of being surrounded by nature, silent except for the crunch of your own footfall in the snow, is a wonderful experience.

FAT BIKE

Fat bikes are bikes with extra wide tyres that are easy to control and guarantee superior stability even on rough terrain, especially when covered by snow. Even though they were invented in 1989 by Simon Rakower, they only became popular in 2014.

HUSKY VILLAGE

The Husky Village sleddog centre in Arnoga in the winter and summer offers fantastic excursions along the Decouville or the Val Viola accompanied by huskies. In winter adults can drive their own sled while children and the elderly can comfortably sit on the instructor’s sled and enjoy the view.

GOLF

The Fornace golf course offers 9 holes for beginners who want to start playing this fantastic sport and for experienced golfers who can cut loose on what many experts consider one of the best mountain courses in Italy.
Designed by architect Mario Verdieri from St. Moritz, the course enjoys a splendid mountain backdrop, an ideal fresh, dry climate and excellent maintenance.

BERNINA EXPRESS

A UNESCO world Heritage Site since 2008, the Bernina Express is one of the highest railways in Europe and has connected Valtellina with Switzerland since 1910. Through ingenious feats of engineering and breathtaking viewsthe train in around 2 and a half hours travels from Tirano to St. Moritz reaching a height of 2,253m above sea level at the Ospizio Bernina station, the highest point on the line. With a day ticket it is possible to alight at any stop and then board the next train, offering passengers the chance to explore and take photos wherever they like.

SUMMER SKIING ON THE STELVIO PASS

Skiing in the summer on the glacier is a unique and unforgettable experience. The Stelvio glacier offers the chance to try it from the end of May to the first weekend in November.

THE TERRACED WINE ROUTE

Wine lovers and history buffs will love this panoramic route through the terraced vineyards that take you from Teglio (around 50mins from Bormio) to Sondrio, passing through Chiuro, Ponte in Valtellina and Tresivio. Along the way, surrounded by the splendid scenery of the Valtellina vineyards, interesting places to stop off and visit include Palazzo Besta in Teglio. The Santuario della Santa Casa di Loreto in Tresivio and Castel Grumello just outside Sondrio. On your way back to Bormio make sure you stop off at the Santuario della Madonna di Tirano, the Basilica where there were reports of an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1501.
